If you’re in the market for a luxury compact SUV, then you’re probably already familiar with the Volvo XC60 and the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC300. These are two stylishly well-appointed SUVs with state-of-the-art technology, high-end finishes, and impressive overall performance. If you haven’t yet been able to determine which way the scale seems to be tipping, here are some things to consider.
The XC60 and GLC come standard with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, with very similar horsepower. They both have plenty of power for passing and merging, but the GLC sometimes experiences a bit of turbo lag if you hammer down on the gas. The Volvo has a smoother ride, especially compared to the GLCs with larger wheels and smaller tires, which can feel a bit stiff.
Both SUVs can seat five people comfortably. However, taller passengers will struggle with headroom in the GLC Coupe due to its sloping roofline. Even in the four-door model, the Volvo is roomier in the back and has considerably more cargo space. Both have a mostly user-friendly infotainment system with large touchscreens and voice command capability, but the Volvo comes with better standard audio features that cost extra in the Mercedes.
Both the XC60 and the GLC300 come with a good amount of standard safety and driver assistance features. But the Volvo’s list is more impressive. In addition to the usual options, the XC60 also has reverse automatic emergency braking (not just forward), rain-sensing windshield wipers, and traffic sign recognition.
