Volvo came into existence because there was a demand for sturdy and safe vehicles on the roads of Sweden. That's why, on April 14, 1927, the very first Volvo car rolled out of the factory in Gothenburg. It was an open tourer featuring a four-cylinder engine known as the ÖV4.
Then, in 1944, Volvo introduced “The little Volvo," the PV 444 model, which propelled the company onto the global stage. From then on, Volvo expanded and promoted its cars as reliable and adaptable machines. The California coast welcomed Volvo in 1955 with the arrival of the PV 444 model in Long Beach. This significant event greatly boosted Volvo's presence in the US, making it the second-largest imported brand at that time.
Did you know that Volvo actually came up with the three-point safety belt? Back in 1959, engineer Nils Bohlin introduced it in the PV 544 model. With the safety of the automotive world at large in mind, Volvo waived the patent rights, making it accessible to everyone and boosting auto safety for all.
Before long, Volvo became synonymous with safety. The US Government even chose the Volvo 240 model as the official benchmark for safety standards in crash testing for all new cars. Volvo introduced several other groundbreaking innovations to the automotive industry, including the transverse five-cylinder engine, self-adjusting belt reels, front-wheel drive, Side Impact Protection Systems, and Delta-link rear suspension.
Since its inception, Volvo's primary focus has always been safety. The company takes pride in consistently prioritizing people in its design philosophy.
Let's jump ahead to the 21st century. Volvo stepped into the SUV realm with the XC90. Soon after, they set up a manufacturing plant in China, marking a significant move beyond Europe. Fast forward to 2018, when they expanded even further by opening their first US manufacturing plant in Charleston, South Carolina. With facilities in Europe, Asia, and North America, Volvo truly became a global player in the manufacturing scene.
In 2019, Volvo introduced its very first all-electric SUV, the Volvo XC40 Recharge P8. With these groundbreaking advancements and a commitment to dependable performance, Volvo is dedicated to reducing its environmental footprint in the years ahead.
